SIMA presents: ‘Jahbero’ The Music of Tadd Dameron – Saturday, 27th of March 2021:
Many jazz fans know about Tadd Dameron and would recognise a few of the tunes he made famous, and which have become staples of the bebop/hard bop repertoire. “All the Things You Are, “Good Bait”, “If You Could See Me Now” and “Soultrane” are well known but Dameron’s many other pieces for which he was celebrated in the 40s and 50s by his peers and by the critics, strike a chord with listeners today.
Often working with sextets to ten-piece groups Dameron was the bebop composer/arrange a deep thinker about the new music who also imbued his contributions to it with more than a nod to the legacy of the swing era. That legacy can be heard in his rhythmic approach, and it can be felt in most of his work. The great Dexter Gordon called him the “romanticist of bebop” and this accurately describes the charm and poignancy of many of his compositions.
Jahbero, is a new septet brought together by drummer Andrew Dickeson celebrates the musical legacy of Tadd Dameron. It features some of the leading young, bebop-inspired players on the scene like alto saxophonist Michael Griffin and tenor player Tim Kovacs anchored by the outstanding bebop rhythm section of Dickeson and bassist Brendan Clarke.
