CHET BAKER meets BILL EVANS – Rodric White Trio + guests – Saturday, 26th of August 2023:
The Rodric White Trio with guests Ralph Pyl (trumpet), Ukrainian jazz singer Julia Shved and guitarist Steve Crain perform the music of trumpeter / singer Chet Baker and pianist Bill Evans, who recorded together on Chet’s 1959 self-titled album (Riverside Records).
The music and life of Chet Baker were celebrated in the 2016 film ‘BORN TO BE BLUE’ starring Ethan Hawke. Chet shot to fame in the early 1950s in the Mulligan / Baker Quartet, going on to record with Stan Getz, Art Pepper, Paul Desmond, Jim Hall, Herbie Hancock and Elvis Costello.
Bill Evans truly arrived in Jazz on Miles Davis’ 1959 album ‘KIND OF BLUE’ before forming landmark trios with bass players Scott La Faro, Eddie Gomez and Marc Johnson, drummers Paul Motian, Elliot Zigmund and Joe LaBarbara. Bill redefined Jazz Piano, inspiring pianists Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Jacky Terrasson and Brad Mehldau.
Rodric is delighted to perform the music of Chet Baker and Bill Evans with Ralph Pyl (Sydney All Star Big Band / Tom Burlinson), Lloyd Swanton (the catholics / the Necks), Steve Crain (Rebekka Neville Trio), Steve Ley (Patricia Ségui / Simone Waddell) and special guest Julia Shved (jazz singer from Lviv, Ukraine).

Rodric White’s arrangements allowed the talented six-piece band to display their considerable skills allowing the musicians to entertain and display their skills as soloists and as an ensemble.’ – Mark Pigott (Sydney Arts Guide)
‘It surprised me to hear him announce a Keith Jarrett number. Even more so when [Rodric] played an extract from the Koln Concert. That took guts …’ – John Fenton NZ Jazz Critic (Australia & Pacific Gigs Review)
