Peter O’Mara Trio – Wednesday, 22nd of February 2023:
Peter O’Mara began his professional career in Sydney in 1976. He had private lessons with George Golla at the Academy of Guitar as well as jazz clinics with musicians like Dave Liebman, Randy Brecker, John Scofield, and Hal Galper.
He was awarded the prestigious “Don Banks Memorial Fellowship” for overseas study in 1981. Peter spent three months in New York in the summer of 1981 going to concerts, and jam sessions and having lessons from musicians like Attila Zoller, who was so excited about Peter´s musicality that he recommended him for a position teaching jazz guitar at the University of Memphis, Tennessee.
He was a prizewinner for Jazz Composition 1980 & 1982, awarded by the NSW Jazz Action Society. O’Mara moved to Munich, Germany in late 1981 and quickly established himself as one of the most versatile guitarists and composers in Europe. Many concerts and recordings with musicians like Dave Holland, Joe Lovano, Bob Mintzer, Kenny Wheeler, Randy Brecker, Charlie Mariano, Adam Nussbaum, NDR Bigband, and the United Jazz & Rock Ensemble. He performed with German jazz legend Klaus Doldinger and his Jazz Rock group „Passport“ for 30 years with tours all over Europe, Brasil, South Africa, Morocco, and New Zealand.
As a composer and bandleader, he has recorded 20 CDs to date. He has professorships for Jazz Guitar at the University for Music and Theatre in Munich as well as the Bruckner University in Linz. He has written a number of successful books that were published by internationally acclaimed publishers Advance Music/Schott Music.
