Greasy Chicken Orchestra XMAS PARTY ft. Justine Clarke + Paul Cutlan: Wednesday, 22nd of December 2021:
Come join the Greasy Chicken Orchestra this Wednesday night, with special guests, Justine Clarke and Paul Cutlan for our final end-of-2021, holiday party at Foundry616.
Justine will be singing a few X-mas tunes, and jazz tunes as well, and ace saxophonist/clarinetist Paul Cutlan will be our guest soloist, along with the usual great musicians we’ve always featured.
She and a small group version of the GCO will be featured performing live with guest host Simon Marnie on Drive on the ABC at 5 PM this coming Monday night (20 Dec).
And if you missed Peter Nelson’s Eastside Radio show, On The Corner, this week, you can hear the Live Music feature of his excellent recording of the last GCO gig at Foundry 616 as a streaming event any time, right here! Tune in at around half-hour in, and listen out for our live set + some new of our newest arrangements.
The repertoire will be our usual range of both well-known and obscure jazz tunes of the 1920s and 1930s (well, mostly obscure), mixed with some original arrangements of holiday tunes, all arranged for an 8-piece jazz ensemble, featuring a 4-saxophone front line.

“Johnston has always understood that jazz’s history is a rich resource rather than a liability, and with this band, he immerses himself almost completely in this era of energized and good-humored dance music… A nuanced and blended sonority, combined with an emphasis on pinpoint arrangements and concise solos.” – John Shand, Sydney Morning Herald
Those who have enjoyed the spirited live shows before will know they perform in the “Territory Band” tradition of Kansas City, Chicago, and New Orleans jazz of the ’20s and ’30s.
The GCO repertoire includes music from Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Lil Hardin Armstrong, The John Kirby Sextet, Raymond Scott, Scott Joplin, Don Redman, and Duke Ellington.
Join us for an unforgettable night of music as we celebrate the end of 2021 and the beginning of 2022!
