Michelle Nicolle album launch: The Bach Project – Thursday, 20th of July 2023:
“Michelle is a singer born to charm, enlighten and seduce through music.” – Kurt Elling 2012
“..all the band had to do was set up a golden glow of warmth, soft groove, and space and Nicolle was soaring to places you will be taken by few singers. In the world, I mean.” – John Shand, SMH, 2016
Michelle Nicolle has forged a reputation Nationally and Internationally as a celebrated and creative jazz vocalist-musician. Bell Award, Mo Award, National Jazz Award winner, and 3-time A.R.I.A Finalist. A supremely skilled vocalist, storyteller, arranger, and improvisor with a knack for breathing new life into songs anywhere from Tin Pan Alley to Cold Chisel to J.S. Bach.
Together for 24 years, with 9 albums, and national and international tours, the Michelle Nicolle Quartet are a 21st-century improvising chamber group, each member wielding a highly developed sense of musical possibilities that the collective can achieve at any moment.
Michelle returns after a long hiatus to Foundry 616 to launch the brand new album The Bach Project (Earshift Music).
At the heart of it, J.S. Bach was a composer with an improvisors spirit and in the hands of the Michelle Nicolle Quartet, his music is reimagined with this spirit once more. Nearly 3 years in the making this is Michelle’s 9th release. The majesty and formal brilliance of Bach’s music is taken on a journey that creates a completely new sonic outcome, but the song remains the same.
As part of a NSW/ACT Launch Tour, on Thursday, July 20th Michelle and her fabulous group will showcase the whole album, The Bach Project, and also some songs from their long-term repertoire – including Michelle’s own compositions and arrangements of lovely Standards.
