Tom Thorp Quartet – Wednesday, 9th of August, 2023:
Tom Thorp is a multi-award-winning saxophonist and composer from the UK. His playing has taken him all over the world as a jazz soloist, original artist, and session musician.
Having worked with as diverse a range of artists/ensembles as the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra; Manchester indie-rave legend, Happy Mondays frontman Shaun Ryder; James Brown’s very own inventor of funk Pee-Wee Ellis and international jazz names including Gwilym Simcock, Bob Mintzer, Guy Barker, and Krzysztof Urbanski; Tom is no stranger to finding the gaps between musical genres.
His playing happily dives into those gaps to pull up all manner of choice saxophonic gems. With influences from his work in the classical world evident in his virtuosic control and inventive melodic voice, there is a power, fluency, and soul in Tom’s modern sound which speaks of many hours engrossed in only the best jazz records. Add to that the potential for fiery, grunge-like intensity and playfully intricate original compositions and we have what promises to be an engaging night of great jazz music.
Tom joins us as part of a short tour, on his first visit to Australia. Leading a who’s-who quartet of leading Australian players, he will be showcasing both some of his original material and classic jazz sounds.
