Barry / Undy / Gander – Thursday, 7th of March 2024:
Reuniting after a long hiatus, Barry/Undy/Gander presents a suite of new music inspired by the infinite possibilities within the short-form frame of haiku poetry. Echoes of Thelonious Monk, Carla Bley, and Bela Bartok materialise and evaporate as the trio navigates Barry’s water-colouristic & labyrinthine compositions with a trademark improvisatory rapport.
- Steve Barry – piano
- Cameron Undy – bass
- Andrew Gander – drums
Dr Steve Barry is the Program Leader for Jazz at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Hailed by Loudmouth Magazine as “one of Australia’s most inventive and accomplished composer/improvisers”, his work oscillates across Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and Vietnam and between contemporary jazz, musical theatre, free improvisation, and contemporary chamber & art music.
Barry’s 2023 album In the Waves featured luminary drummer Eric Harland (USA) and saxophonist Will Vinson (USA/UK), and was praised by the Sydney Morning Herald as “…the finest installment to date of the pianist’s bristling musical intelligence, rhythmic mutability, melodic flair, and compositional gifts.”
Barry also regularly tours throughout Japan in a longstanding trio collaboration with drummer/tabla player Ko Omura, where he has recorded with acclaimed koto player Michiyo Yagi and bassist Yoshio Suzuki (formerly of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers).
