The catholics – Friday, 7th of July 2023:
One of Australia’s most beloved, long-running worldbeat/jazz ensembles is guaranteed to put a smile on your face and get your body grooving.
This show features another never-before-seen combination – The catholics welcome back guest percussionist Adem Yilmaz, who wows everyone with his intricate eastern rhythms every time he appears with the band, and Adem will be heard for the first time with the new catholics guitarist and banjoist, Julian Curwin, who impressed mightily on the band’s previous Foundry show.
Then there’s Sandy Evans on saxophones, Hamish Stuart on the drums, Gary Daley (piano accordion, melodica), James Greening on trombone and trumpet, and leader Lloyd Swanton on the bass.
The catholics will be infusing their jazz with an intoxicating blend of worldbeat grooves – Caribbean, Brazilian, African, southern funk, and not a little of that hard-to-pin-down catholicity.
No more joyous way to warm yourself up on a chilly winter night!
