Playing With Monk: Peter Dasent and Phillip Johnston 8:30 PM:
Peter Dasent:
Pianist Peter Dasent is widely known as a bandleader (The Umbrellas, Bravo Nino Rota!), film music composer (Peter Jackson’s early films Meet The Feebles, Brain Dead and Heavenly Creatures), and jazz musician (Playing With Monk, The Greasy Chicken Orchestra), as well as for his long-time behind-the scenes role as resident pianist and musical director for ABC-TV’s Play School.
Soprano/alto saxophonist Phillip Johnston tours internationally, having played in the last few years in Sydney, Melbourne, London, Paris, New York, and Buenos Aires among others.
In June, Johnston travelled to New York to perform at Brooklyn’s Barbès night club, record an episode of WNYC-FM ’s Sound Check, with John Schaefer, now in its 21st year, (first as broadcast radio in New York, now as a podcast on-demand) and to do the US launch of the paperback edition of his book on silent film music, Silent Films/Loud Music. His group The Greasy Chicken Orchestra launched its first CD, I Cakewalked With A Zombie (Earshift), at Foundry616 on July 27.
Bill Shoemaker, in Point of Departure (USA), comments that “his alto approaches Paul Desmond’s idealized martini dryness”.
Playing With Monk is their duo project exploring lesser-known tunes by Thelonious Monk, film music by Rota, Morricone, and others, and their own Monkish originals.
Chris Abrahams/Jeremy Rose Duo 10 PM:
Chris Abrahams (Benders, Laughing Clowns, and The Necks). Chris has recorded several solo albums, as well as collaborations with Melanie Oxley from the Sparklers. Abrahams has also been a session musician on albums for artists such as The Church, The Whitlams, Midnight Oil, Wendy Matthews, Skunkhour, and Silverchair.
Jeremy Rose is known as both a leader and collaborator across a dizzying array of diverse projects, including The Earshift Orchestra, The Jeremy Rose Quartet, Visions of Nar, and The Vampires. He is a multiple award-winning composer, producer, and instrumentalist and heads the pioneering Australian label, Earshift Records, which showcases new Australian music.
“buoyant invention: never seeming to flag or to want for new ideas, he is that rare thing, an improvisor you want to hear more from… Jeremy Rose is one to watch on the Australian jazz scene… “ –Jazzwise, UK

“…mood, atmosphere and groove took precedence… creating an air of mystery that lingered long after the tune had ended.” – The Age, Melbourne, Jessica Nicholas (reviewing Nightjar)
