Andrew Speight Quintet (USA) – Saturday, 2nd of April 2022:
Originally from Sydney, in 1991, Andrew moved to the USA. He built the Michigan State University jazz program and then the San Francisco State University program in 2000 with Branford Marsalis.
He has played and recorded primarily with NEA Jazzmasters – his most recording recent recording which is about to be released features stars including Roy McCurdy, Terrell Stafford, Ralph Moore & Eric Alexander.
Since the outbreak of Covid, he has done weekly live streams to the world playing the music of Jazz Masters from the beginning of jazz up to the 90s – representing the general concept and Canon of black American Jazz music. This was in sync with the times of Black Lives Matter and many other social events in the USA.
His group in Sydney – featuring drummer Andrew Dickeson, pianist John Harkins, bassist Brendan Clarke, and trumpeter Simon Ferenci will be playing arrangements from Art Blakey, Horace Silver, Dizzy, Bird, Cannonball, Coltrane, etc – but their own unique interpretations – fresh and new. This is certainly not your average jazz quintet.
