‘The Quintet’ is a 5-piece jazz ensemble led by pianist Jacob Jayasena, dedicated to honouring the rich legacy of jazz quintets—from legends like Miles Davis and Charlie Parker—while pushing the boundaries of contemporary jazz.
The group features some of Sydney’s most exciting rising stars alongside one of its most respected saxophonists, David Theak. Originally from Solo, Indonesia, Jacob made his mark in his home country with standout performances, including the International Ubud Village Jazz Festival (2019), before relocating to Sydney in 2020. Under the guidance of renowned pianists Indra Lesmana, Judy Bailey, Kevin Hunt, and Steve Barry, he has developed a sound that is both authentic and forward-looking. Jacob currently studies at the prestigious Sydney Conservatorium of Music on scholarship.
Joining the ensemble is featured vocalist Keala Burns, whose classical and jazz training at the Conservatorium High School has shaped a refined, expressive sound. Her talents have earned her a 4-year full scholarship to the Berklee College of Music in Boston.
