Foundry regulars will remember Anna Salleh from her previous Brazilian jazz shows at the Foundry. In this quartet Anna shares her love for Brazilian music with the masterful Gino Pengue on guitar, exquisite clarinetist and saxophonist Loretta Palmeiro and maestro of percussion Jess Ciampa.
The name ‘SERAFINA’ expresses the soulful feeling of the band, which pays homage to classics by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Baden Powell as well as original tunes Anna co-penned in her former collaboration with Guy Strazz.
Anna first fell in love with bossa nova as a child, and later headed for Rio de Janeiro to deepen her understanding of the music. She has performed internationally and is known for her collaborations with some of Australia’s best world/jazz musicians e.g. in the Afro Latin Moods Quartet (with guitarist Guy Strazz) and the five-piece Gorgeous Songs from Brazil & Beyond, with which she produced two albums.
Gino is a much sought-after guitarist playing a wide range of styles from solo to ensembles with the cream of local and international artists in Sydney. He is a member of the world music band Marsala and an inspiring teacher and mentor of young guitar students.
Loretta is an Australian Arts Council Grant recipient and founding member of gypsy swing group Spyglass Gypsies and co-director of jazz/Portuguese music fusion band Alma Orquestra. She also co-leads a unique duo with Mark Isaacs called Some of Two Parts and performs with the Divergence Jazz Orchestra, Pharos and toured with ARIA-award winning world-music group Mara.
Jess is a multi instrumentalist at home in a variety of styles ranging from classical orchestral music to salsa bands, and currently plays with the world music group Marsala and is a member of the triple Aria award winning group Monsieur Camembert. He has toured extensively including in Europe, where he has performed at The Royal Albert Hall.
