Description

Major Zulu – Saturday, 18th of November 2023:

“Such an immaculate performance that leaves a reviewer speechless. What can onesay about a performance that has so much going for it and ticks so many boxes’ – Eric Myers – Jazz Critic

Zambian born, London educated, Paris trained, jazz and soul singer, Major Zulu brings aflavour of Nu-jazz with an international flair. Audiences love her earthy vocal tones and artful storytelling. Jazz critic Myers said thatlike all great singers, Major understands understatement, she has stage presence and like a skilled actor she knows how to sell a song.

Major has appeared on the same stage and festivals as Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse, James Morrison (jazz), Paolo Nutini, and Earth Wind and Fire to name a few’She hasbeen featured in a movie ‘Jamais Contente’ by French Director Emelie Deleuze, playingthe role of a gospel singer. She has previously lent her voice to Grammy award winning band “Basement Jaxx” on track “Everybody”.

In 2021 Major released singles “Tryin Times” and “Broken” from her EP. Trying Times was originally written by Donny Hathaway and Leroy Hut-son and first released by Roberta Flack in 1969. Major released it as an Ode to her father who was an activist for democracy in Zambia. Major’s second single ‘Broken’ was written as a result of a painful break up in the city of love; (Paris).

She then released her EP “The DIY Project Called Life”, a journey of self discovery through music and travel, to rave reviews on national radio stations. Major recently performed at the Sydney International Women’s jazz festival. The festival had a massive program and Major’s closing concert on 4th Nov 2022 was sold out.

Her band includes a number of brilliant young jazz and soul musicians, part of an outstanding new generation which has emerged in Sydney over the last few years.

Major is now getting ready to go into the studio to record what she says will be her best work yet.

“It’s time to tell my story, even the parts that have not been so comfortable for me. I want the world to feel the beauty, the earth, the light, the darkness and fun elements that havebeen the makings of me.”
