Matt McMahon Quartet – Special Project – Thursday, 18th of January 2024:
Matt McMahon is a multi-award-winning pianist/composer who has appeared on over 100 albums and thousands of performances with a diverse range of artists including Vince Jones, Australian Chamber Orchestra, Phil Slater, Katie Noonan, Carl Dewhurst, Gurrumul, Steve Hunter, Emma Pask, etc.
For this special performance he will be joined by his long-term musical friend Simon Barker (drums) – and two fantastic musicians who have just graduated form the Sydney Conservatorium of music, where both Matt and Simon teach: Ben Lerner (alto sax) and Nick Jansen (bass). These two young musicians are already in great demand on the Sydney scene and will bring their fresh improvisational voices to Matt’s repertoire of original tunes.
Matt’s compositions bring influences from jazz, classical, rock, and various traditional music – and most important of all they always allow for improvisers to bring their own flavour to the table.
