Pharos:
PHAROS is a 10-piece powerhouse formed in 2016, led by bassist Hannah James. These talented members represent some of Australia’s most forward-thinking players and improvisers including multiple winners of the prestigious Jann Rutherford Memorial award.
Featuring a 6 piece horn section and 4 piece rhythm section, this unique and electrifying collective merge the best of the big band with the flexibility, creativity and genre-bending exploration expected in any modern ensemble.
In its short life span, the group has worked with incredible local and international artists including Helen Sung (USA), Ingrid and Christine Jensen (USA/Canada), Silke Eberhardt (Ger.). Lakisha Benjamin (USA) and Dr Sandy Evans (Syd) including performances at the Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival and Sydney Con International Jazz Festival.
The SWJC is committed to performing and promoting leading contemporary Australian jazz composition and female composers from here and around the world. Composers they have worked with include Andrea Keller (Melb), Silke Eberhardt (Ger), Jenna Cave, Harri Harding, Glenn Doig, Rafael Karlen and Paul Cutlan.
