MICHAEL GORDON SWINGIN’ QUARTET:
“Michael Gordon is one of the most talented saxophonists to emerge on the Sydney and Australian scene in the last decade. After jazz studies in New Zealand, he enrolled at the Sydney Conservatorium where he studied under, Mike Nock, Dave Panichi and Dale Barlow. Since then he has developed as a strong force on the Sydney scene. In addition to saxophone, he is a superb flute player, having studied with Alison Mitchell, principal flutist with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra.
Though his roots are in the hard bop sax tradition, he performs in a
variety of jazz contexts including the Ethio-funk of Dereb the Ambassador, with whom he toured Japan a few years ago. Michael also played at the East Sydney Hotel with singer kate Wadey and with the Cricketer’s Arms Big Band.
The new band he brings into Foundry616 tonight includes only one veteran, ex-Chicagoan and keeper of the hard bop piano flame in Sydney John Harkins, along with a bright and exciting rhythm section of Jacob Graham (bass) and for tonight only on drums, from New York, special guest Jerome Jennings (drums). Foundry 616 welcomes Jerome. This will be the jazz tradition revisited with purpose, intelligence, and passion.
