Doig Collective – Wednesday, 11th of May 2022:
Doig Collective returns to Foundry 616 with a brand new set of pianist and bandleader Glenn Doig’s original compositions.
Glenn has been active on the Sydney jazz scene with his trio, 8-piece Doig Collective and Doig Big Band since 2007. Doig Trio first debuted at Jazzgroove in 2009, and since then Doig Collective and Doig Big Band have been infrequent regulars at Foundry 616 and Venue 505. In 2011, this band was recorded by ABC Jazz for Mal Stanley’s “Thursday Night Live”. In 2016 the Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival commissioned Glenn to write 2 pieces for the debut performance of Pharos.
Doig Collective’s last performance at Foundry 616 in 2021 revisited Glenn’s back catalogue of compositions for 2009-2019 for the last time. In recent years performances by the Doig Collective have reflected Glenn’s study of the compositions of his mentors including Dale Barlow, Dave Panichi, Mike Nock and Sean Wayland.
The rest of 2021 saw Glenn finally find the time to write a long-awaited set of fresh tunes that feature a stunning array of Sydney’s finest instrumentalists. This new set of Glenn’s original compositions will be followed by a set of new arrangements of the compositions of Matt McMahon taken from Band Of Five Name’s debut eponymous album, and Matt’s trio album Ellipsis.
