Freyja is a compositional storyteller. Her pieces are through-composed journeys; they weave the listener through a series of magical soundscapes, heavy grooves and unforgettable melodies. Her sound combines an eclectic array of musical genres including but not limited to traditional and contemporary jazz, elector-pop, neo-soul, Afro-Caribbean styles, funk and reggae i.e. ‘Nu-jazz’!
Freyja has spent the last few years exploring her compositional style whilst completing her undergraduate in Performance and Jazz Composition at Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA. Since returning to Australia, Freyja has been busy performing in various groups throughout Australia. This year she has been on three Australian tours, including the recent sold out Endless Weekend tour with prolific Disco Pop producer and bassist. She has also released her first single on Spotify under her own name: Freyja Garbett ‘The Quiet Perceiver Remix’. She has also had the opportunity to expand her musical horizons in New York city and Amsterdam. In 2017 Freyja was commissioned by SIMA and APRA AMCOS to compose an extended work to perform with the Sydney Women’s Jazz Collective for the 2017 Sydney International Women’s Jazz Festival. She is excited to be releasing her debut album of original works in Winter 2019.
Freyja is grateful to have found a community of talented like-minded musicians within Sydney whom she will perform with in her septet.
Joining Freyja, will be:
Felix Lalanne – guitar
Simon Ferenci – trumpet
Tenor Sax – Nish Manjunath
Tenor Sax – Michael Avgenicos
Bass – Jacques Emery
Drumkit – Alexander Inman-Hislop
Two guitars, tenor saxophone, bass and drums – ARCINGWIRES are a 5-piece high energy modern jazz rock group from Sydney, Australia. AW is a collaborative unit playing original compositions written by all 5 members, drawing influence from artists like Kneebody, Ben Eunson, Avishai Cohen’s Big Vicious and Donny McCaslin Group but with a heavy prog-rock slant.
The members of AW initially met during their time studying jazz at the Sydney Conservatorium, but have now gone on to become some of Sydney’s most in demand sidemen, often overlapping in many different projects and scenes. This band can be called something of a supergroup: drummer Alex Hirlian is the latest recipient of Australia’s most sought after jazz recognition, The National Jazz Award. Guitarist Felix Lalanne was awarded Equal 2nd at the Montreux Jazz Festival Guitar Competition, while the other 3 members of the group perform and lead their own groups at the highest level nationally and internationally.
The band is currently preparing to record their debut album in July, and just recently appeared at Holland’s “Rabobank Amersfoort Jazz Festival”, with a successive debut European tour in May/June, which saw us play gigs in London, Paris, Amsterdam and Berlin. The band is also gearing up for a mainstage appearance at Bali’s Ubud Village Jazz Festival, headlined this year by Aaron Goldberg Trio.
