Virna Sanzone and Marcello Maio:
“…the vocal strength of Sanzone. She traversed a range of genres with enviable versatility.”
Eric Myers, The Australian
“Relaxed and unaffected, Sanzone’s voice danced…with irrepressible swing…”
John Shand, SMH
“…left the musicians breathless and the audience whooping with delight” Jessica Nicholas, The Age
“Sanzone has a voice like the caramel layer in a piece of caramel slice…so smooth, warm and pliable…and you’d definitely want a second serve with another piece to take home. It’s rich and beautiful.” Lissa Christopher, SMH
Following Virna’s electrifying duo performances with Kevin Hunt earlier this year, Foundry 616 are thrilled to welcome her back for a night of exploratory, multicultural, jazz-infused music at it’s best, this time joined by the brilliant Marcello Maio!
Acknowledged as one of Australia’s most distinguished jazz and soul artists, multilingual vocalist, Virna Sanzone has worked with an impressive list of Australian greats, including Paul Grabowsky, The Australian Art Orchestra, Paul Kelly and Richard Clapton to name a few.
Tonight she reunites with the astounding talents of pianist and piano accordionist Marcello Maio.
Marcello Maio’s trademark musicianship and versatility across a range of musical genres has established him in some of Sydney’s most highly acclaimed Latin, Jazz and World music ensembles, such as Monsieur Camembert and Baby et Lulu. He possesses a truly extraordinary capacity for interpretation and personal engagement.
“a masterpiece of spiralling melody and harmony that featured a Marcello Maio piano solo where each note was as carefully weighted as are words when trying to bandage a broken relationship.”
John Shand, SMH
Virna Sanzone – voice
Marcello Maio – piano & piano accordion
NB: Kevin Hunt, who was originally advertised to perform tonight, has regrettably had to withdraw due to unforeseen circumstances.
