DAVE THEAK’S ORGAN TRANSPLANT:
Stalwart of the Australian Jazz scene, David Theak re-unites with Organ transplant, a good-time Hammond Organ Band designed to warm Sydney’s hearts. Featuring the ‘once young’ David Theak on tenor saxophone/vocals, a ‘young-ish’ Steve Barry on Hammond organ, and genuine young-guns Alex Hirlian (drums) and Felix Lalanne (guitar), this multi-generational band led by Theak aim to give audiences a jazzy good time. The sole aim of this gig is for music lovers to have a couple of post-work drinks, catching up with their friends, talking, laughing, heckling and downright enjoying themselves at an informal jazz gig at one of Australia’s best music venues, Foundry 616. The music will swing, groove, shuffle and feel as good while still delivering listeners the creative energy that these incredible four musicians (including 2 National Jazz Ward Winners) are renowned for. Repertoire will be drawn from the standard songbook and jazz legends such as John Scofield, Dexter Gordon, Jimmy Smith, Wes Montgomery and anyone else that writes a song that we reckon will get your toes tapping.
“There has never been a better context in which to enjoy Theak’s brawny, testifying tenor saxophone, and you have the sort of night in which audiences are inclined to whoop and holler in response to genuinely hair-raising solos. Thickening the appeal is the presence of Steve Barry’s rich, supple, snaking organ, and that of drummer Alex Hirlian, who keeps cluster-bombing the music until it blows clean into the stratosphere.”John Shand – SMH
