JUDY BAILEY TRIO:
Judy Bailey’s new trio is a killer with one of the best rhythm sections in the country. Its line-up will make for a brilliant evening’s listening as Judy’s intelligent, silken pianism combines with bassist Jonathan Zwartz’s elegant and subtle bass playing, all propelled by the dynamic drumming of Tim Firth.
Judy Bailey’s career as Australia’s premier female jazz pianist is one of stellar achievement. Originally from New Zealand, Judy was apart of that hugely important group of young jazz musicians who were to change the face of Australian jazz from the early 60s on. As a soloist, composer/arranger and educator Judy has made profound contributions to the music around her but also to Australian jazz culture through her lobbying for the creation of the Jaz Co-ordination programs that gave support to musicians throughout the 80s and 90s.
Judy was part of the El Rocco scene in the early 60s along with fellow New Zealander Mike Nock, A decade later her quartet was one of the key bands that performed at the Basement in 1the 70s. She toured nationally and internationally for Musica Viva and was on the staff of the new jazz course at the Sydney Conservatorium from its inception.
Her interest in jazz education continues with the group she founded called Jazz Connection, a 14 piece big band for young musicians, and also at the Conservatorium.
