A night of Indian classical music with Manish Pingle and Bobby Singh – Sunday, 5th of March 2023:
Manish Pingle is a virtuoso mohan veena (Indian slide guitar) player and began his tutelage under the late Shri Vishnu Waliwadekar. Manish is now one of the senior disciples of Ustad Shahid Paravez, the famous sitar maestro of Itawa gharana.
While Manish plays ‘Indian slide guitar’ with drone and sympathetic strings, he has introduced a slightly different right hand picking style to other masters Pt Vishwamohan Bhatt and Debashish Bhattacharya, by using index finger and thumb on the main melody strings; allowing for a tremendous advantage for speed.
He also added an extra base string which helps him attain an additional half lower octave.
Manish has toured regularly throughout the world and recently returned from sold out shows in Norway, Denmark, Sweden and France.
Bobby Singh (tabla):
Born and raised in England, Bobby Singh spent a great deal of his childhood in Mumbai studying at Sangeet Mahabharati, an institute of music started by the great tabla maestro Pandit Nikhil Ghosh. Recognised with a great talent at a young age, Bobby became a student of Ghosh’s senior disciple Aneesh Pradhan, now one of the most sought after tabla players in the world.
Bobby has played alongside cultural icons such as, Grammy award winner Pt Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, John Butler, Slava Grigoryan amongst others.
Most recently a documentary on his musical life was recorded and shown on SBS titled Viva, I Belong Everywhere.
