Description

Matt Ottignon meets Alister Spence Lloyd Swanton and Toby hall for a night celebrating the rich history of Australian and NZ jazz from the last 50 years, performing the music of Mike Nock, Sandy Evans, Bernie McGann, Andrea Keller and more plus originals by the band members themselves.

Matt Ottignon is a gun sax player with indisputable musical genes. Originally from Auckland, New Zealand and brother to Blue Note signed Aron Ottignon, Matt landed himself a spot in Mike Nock’s band while studying at the Sydney Conservatorium in 1999 and has been in demand ever since and was a finalist at the 2002 Wangaratta National Jazz Awards, a two-time Freedman Fellowship nominee and previous Jazzgroove Association Artistic director.

“lusciously lyrical tenor” – The Australian

Matt has performed at the Foundry with Ten Part Invention, Java Quartet, Dereb the Ambassador and his own band Mister Ott, and recently was invited to play in Chris Cody’s new band Astrolabe for S.I.M.A. and also with visiting New York Cuban pianist Elio Villafranca.

Matt creates sounds that spring from everywhere he’s been and everything he’s seen… music that’s undoubtedly earning him a place among the key constituents of the contemporary scene. He leads Sydney band Mister Ott specialising in East African funk and with two albums under their belt, tours internationally with the show Scotch and Soda, a collaboration between the Circus performers Company 2 and the Uncanny Carnival Band which recently performed to rave reviews at the Montreal Circus Festival. He is part of the Aria nominated bands Baby Et Lulu and Lah-Lah’s Big Live Band.

For this evening’s performance he will be joined by esteemed musicians Alister Spence and Lloyd Swanton and Toby Hall. They have been an integral part of the Sydney jazz scene since the early 80’s performing together in Clarion Fracture Zone and recording 7 albums as Alister Spence Trio and have been on many of the defining recordings of the Australian jazz scene, a list too long to mention here.

“entering the sub consciousness takes on a more substantial atmosphere as Matthew Ottignon’s tenor weaves quickly and abstractly” – The Australian
