28 October Saturday – Hetty Kate (Melbourne)
Saturday 28 October 2017, 8.30pm
“A charismatic and technically gifted vocalist” – Chris May, All About Jazz (USA)
Popular British/Australian jazz vocalist Hetty Kate returns to Foundry616 this Spring with a sensational band featuring fellow Melbourne-based guitarist James Sherlock.
Often lauded for her ‘natural musicality’, unadorned vocal style, pure tone and impeccable timing; and these qualities have made her sought after by audiences and musicians alike. Hetty has performed as a professional vocalist for less than a decade, but in that time has certainly made her mark on both the Australian and international jazz scenes. She spent three years singing as part of James Morrison’s touring bands; has graced stages and festivals from New Zealand to New York, joined Grammy Award winning big band David Berger’s Sultans of Swing in May this year, and is now based in Paris, France.
James Morrison remarks that Hetty has “a stage presence only matched by the clarity of her voice” and included her as the featured soloist for his symphonic concert ‘The A to Z of Jazz‘ – which toured Asia, Australia and New Zealand from 2014-2016, winning a coveted ‘Bell Award’ in the Australian National Jazz Awards in 2015.
With an affinity for swing music from the 1930s and 40s, Hetty has also become a popular vocalist for the ever-growing lindy-hop and swing scenes around the world and has released nine albums, joining the ABC Jazz family of vocalists in 2014.
For this concert, Hetty will be joined by outstanding Melbourne guitarist James Sherlock along with two local musicians, Ashley Turner and Andrew Dickeson. Featured on three of Hetty’s releases, James Sherlock is one of Australia’s most respected guitarists and was the winner of the prestigious Ike Isaacs International Jazz Guitar Award. James has performed with a variety of visiting artists including Leroy Jones, Jeff ‘Tain’ Watts, John Riley and New York jazz vocalists Sheila Jordan and Cyrille Aimee.
James and Hetty always create a special magic when they play together and you’ll enjoy a warm evening of masterful music from Hetty’s new release alongside classics and curios from The Great American Songbook.
