Square One & Birds Basement presents

Returns to for the first time since her mesmerising 2018 Bluesfest performances in front of The New Power Generation

Tamar Davis is a true entertainer with a fully developed stage presence. She’s sassy and sexy but also able to laugh at herself, a trait solely missing from a genre filled with dour, overly serious women” ~ Pioneer Press

Ashley Támar Davis, gained worldwide attention for co-writing the Grammy-nominated duet ‘Beautiful, Loved, and Blessed’ with music legend Prince from his acclaimed ‘3121’ album but dig a little deeper and you will discover a fiercely independent artist who continues to create her own path.

Described by the New York Times as having “a voice that can fill 3 stadiums and the moves of Tina Turner”, Davis returns to Australia for the first time since her mesmerising performances out front of The New Power Generation in 2018.

With the official release of her shelved ‘Milk & Honey’ album due in 2019 Ms. Davis is set to hit the road for a series of showcase performances throughout the USA, Europe and Asia-Pacific.

A veritable knockout with voluminous hair, desirable curves and feisty moves, Davis has sung for Presidents, appeared on ‘Saturday Night Live’ ‘Good Morning America’, BET and Brit Awards, ‘Good Morning Houston’, NAACP Image Awards and much more. Via her own Syren Music Group Tamar launched 2 independent albums ‘My Name is Tamar’ and ‘I Am the Storm’ which have garnered impressive sales in Japan, UK, Europe and the United States with features appearing in VIBE magazine, the New York Times and US Weekly to name but a few.

Tamar cultivated her talent at Houston’s High School for the Performing and Visual Arts before moving to Los Angeles to study music at the University of Southern California. She graduated not only with classical training and a Bachelor of Music degree, but also with the ability to sing in French, Italian, German, and Swahili.

A native of Texas Davis started her musical career alongside Beyonce Knowles and Kelly Rowland in Girl’s Tyme, a group that would go on to achieve worldwide fame as Destiny’s Child.

Davis starred as Sarah Vaughan in ‘Sarah Sings a Love Story’, was a feature performer in the first national tour of ‘Motown: The Musical’ and recently nominated for Best Featured Actress in a Musical (Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone) for the critically acclaimed Broadway show ‘A Night with Janis Joplin’. She has toured with Tyler Perry’s ‘Madea Gets a Job’, ‘Madea’s Big Happy Family’, ‘Laugh to Keep from Crying’, ‘The Marriage Counselor’ and many more.

“In an age of gimmicks and over processed sounds, the nostalgic idea of authentic vocals and magnetic stage presence seems un-imaginable. But there’s power in experiencing Grammy-nominated artist Tamar Davis: reminiscent of funk, soul, rock and R&B. She evinces passion meeting entertainment through her authentic, high-energy performances that makes her “Prince’s favorite singer” – Washington Post

Lake Minnetonka

“Why this album didn’t explode with sales from the rabid Prince fans is beyond us, but we’re here to fix that right here and now. It’s full on purple funk front to back.”
– Funkatopia’s 20 Best Funk Albums of 2018

In the vein of Prince, Morris Day and the Time, Madhouse, and Sheila E, Lake Minnetonka is the funk juggernaut forging a Melbourne take on the Minneapolis Sound. Having collaborated with artists such as Eric Leeds (fDeluxe, D’Angelo), Dr Fink (Prince and the Revolution), Sonny Thompson (NPG) and most recently, St Paul Peterson (The Time, fDeluxe), their 80s inspired jazz fusion and on-stage antics will leave you on a purple high.

“Fans have been wondering what ever happened to [Prince side project] Madhouse? Well,      it just so happens to be alive and well in Melbourne Australia in the guise of the band, Lake Minnetonka!”  – Matt “Dr” Fink, Prince and the Revolution

Based in Melbourne Australia, Lake Minnetonka features bandleader and composer Adam Rudegeair (PBS FM’s ‘Black Wax’, The Bowie Project) on keytar and synths, Jack Wieseler on guitar, Ann Metry (Sol Nation) on bass, Emily Shaw on drums and ‘AJ’ Jackson on tenor sax, as well as frequent guest vocalists and musicians. In addition to their own original robofunk tunes, Lake Minnetonka love to get down on classic Minneapolis joints from back in the day by the likes of Maserati, The Family, and Morris Day and the Time!

In 1987, Prince released two instrumental jazz/funk albums under the band name Madhouse that blended the bebop-infused saxophone wizardry of Eric Leeds (fDeluxe, D’Angelo), with heavy robotic grooves. It is from these instrumental Madhouse recordings that Lake Minnetonka takes its cues, combining hard and irrepressible beats with infectious jazz riffs and incendiary solos.

Formed in 2013, the band had their first gig at the legendary Purple Emerald, a local haven for funk and acid jazz bands. Swiftly growing a loyal following on the strength of their live shows, the band soon holed up in the recording studio, smashing out five tunes in one session. The fruit of this recording was the EP ‘This Is Lake Minnetonka’, a playful nod to the infamous scene between Prince and Appolonia in Purple Rain that inspired the band’s name.

By 2014, members of Lake Minnetonka were invited onstage to jam with Larry Graham and Graham Central Station during their Bluesfest sideshow at the Corner Hotel. They also played with Dr Fink from Prince and the Revolution when he was in Melbourne, and he joined them on stage during their own gig just before he flew home.

In June 2015, they hosted a ‘Royal Funk Party’ at LuWow, which gave birth to the ‘Royal Funk’ brand of events. Since then, the band has headlined Royal Funk events at Shadow Electric later in 2015, Toff in Town across June 2016 and 2017, and then southside at The Fyrefly in August 2018. This year, a very special Batman inspired Royal Funk Party happened at the Geddes Lane Ballroom on the 30th Anniversary of Prince’s ‘Batdance’ single.

In August 2015, Adam went to Minneapolis to do some writing and recording with former Prince band members Dr Fink, Eric Leeds and Sonny Thompson. Back at home, Adam got the band back in the studio, recording tracks to complement the Minneapolis recordings. Three of these tracks were released during 2016.

2017 saw Lake Minnetonka play the Sydney Road Street Festival and the Stonnington Jazz Festival, as well launching their single, ‘There It Is’ at Bird’s Basement Jazz Club in November. In addition to performing, they did more recording, including with Paul Peterson (The Time, fDeluxe/The Family) when he was in town. He played on two tracks that feature on the band’s debut album, ‘Melbourneapolis’.

The album launch was at Howler in February 2018, ahead of headline appearances at Melbourne’s famous Moomba Festival, Leaps and Bounds Festival, Darebin Music Feast, plus local gigs promoting the album.

The band kicked off the new year in style, with the news that ‘Melbourneapolis’ had made it into Funkatopia’s “20 Best Funk Albums of 2018”, alongside albums from Janelle Monáe, Judith Hill and Anderson .Paak.

And so began another exciting year for Lake, having already released “The Honey Garden”, an EP featuring one of their outstanding guest vocalists, Françoise D’Argent. This was launched in May, once Adam returned home from his trip to Minneapolis in April, where he did some more recording with Dr. Fink and St. Paul Peterson.

“If you’re a fan of the mid-late 80’s era of Prince, this album is definitely for you…we can confidently award this new release Melbourneapolis with our highly regarded 5 out of 5 afros.” – Funkatopia.com

“Their take on the Minneapolis sound is honest and masterful, which is why the legends in Minneapolis have embraced them and even joined them in the studio. You’ll be hooked after one listen!” –   Christopher Arnel, realmusicradio.com

“Lake Minnetonka know which elements of Purple Snow work and which ones don’t. Keep the funk, keep the soul, and, most importantly, keep the Prince.” – KFAI radio, Minneapolis

“Funklords Lake Minnetonka have been bringing infectious jazz riffs and bouncing funk beats to Melbourne since 2013, jetting between hometown Melbourne and the soulful
