Kongofunk

The charismatic music of Kongofunk is a modern fusion of dance-oriented funk, soul, samba and reggae grooves! Born from Sydney’s eastern suburbs beaches jam sessions in the summer of 2010s, this five-piece outfit has emerged from a rich multicultural musical background.

Originating from South America, the band consists of Rafaela Nardi (vocals), Tales Santiago (bass/vocals), Alex Blexus (guitar/vocals), Pedro Galiardi (guitar) and Juan Mulett (drums/vocals).

The spontaneous vibrancy will transport you on a musical journey from the funk grooves of Ed Motta to the charming tunes of David Bowie.

Kongofunk creates a distinctive high-energy vibe connecting the audience and invites young and old dance the night away.

Let’s get funked!

Lyre Byrdland

The Sydney based, 10-piece instrumental groove machine know as Lyre Byrdland has established itself as a powerhouse of party music since its inception in 2014. Born from a late night of banter and booze in a hip Melbourne bar, within a few years the group has become a heavyweight on the Sydney music scene with an ever-growing fan base of fellow groovers who love to get down.

“We like people to have a good time,” says frontman and Tenor Sax player, David Reglar. “And we love it when we see that in the crowd, when you see one guy is just grooving away totally lost in the music or the whole floor moving to the groove. That’s what our music is about – getting down and having a good time.”

The band was formed in 2014 by the group’s original bassist, Liam Copland after a night out in Melbourne. “Liam and I went to this weird free jazz gig in an abandoned warehouse and let’s say the music was a little too ‘progressive’ for us!” explains Reglar. “We decided to head to this bar down the road and get a drink. There was a DJ in there playing these old Afro-Beat vinyl records and we started talking about how cool it’d be to play Afro-Beat, you know, funky music that people really dig as opposed to the stuff we’d heard next door. One thing lead to another and within 6 months there was a band!”

“The name Lyre Byrdland actually came from Liam’s old Facebook profile. He needed a name for the group’s first gig but couldn’t think of anything so just decided to use that,” continues Reglar. “We’ve since had it pointed out to us that Lyrebirds are great at mimicking noises and other birdsongs and in a way it’s kind of an analogy of what we do – we mimic sounds from other genres and blend them together into something original. So now when people ask about our name, that’s what we tell them!”

2016 was a seminal year for the outfit. Not only was there a big personnel change but they also wrote and recorded their debut album Hotfoot. “It’s like a big music soup” says Reglar of their new release. “With so many great musicians adding their own flavour to the pot the album is something not quite like anything any of us have done before. There’s dance there and a bit of jazz and reggae, all grounded in an afro-beat style. Now we’re so excited by it we’re taking it to the rest of the country!”
