Description

This late inclusion in our programme is a great opportunity to hear two outstanding “next wave” players on the Australian scene in guitarist Carl Morgan and saxophonist Mike Rivett.

Both are National Jazz Award winners (our premier instrumental competition), with Carl taking the top prize in 2014 and Mike in 2016.  Both have performed together in various groups on the Sydney scene, launching and cementing a musical partnership that never fails to spark.

Carl Morgan is an explorer of colour and melody who can provide bite, energy and drive when the occasion demands. Think of it this way: elements of Steve Magnusson fortified by some of James Muller’s exploratory impulse and high energy.  In a straight ahead context a superb player of ballads who is a brilliant accompanist to singers, to the harder edge he displays with Mike Nock’s eight piece project the Noctet, to the unfettered playing he does on the free improv scene with singer Matilda Abraham.

Mike Rivett’s tenor style owes much to Coltrane but he is also a musician who understands that energetic playing can’t be an end in itself but a means to achieve something more complex a complete.  A good tone, witty phrasing and a deep sense of structure make his playing a pleasure to experience.

Carl Morgan –guitar
Mike Rivett – tenor sax
Thomas – Botting – bass
Alex Hirlian – drums

Making his Fo8ndry616 debut as leader is guitarist Yutaro Okuda, presenting a set of original compositions in trio format. Since wrapping up at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Yutaro has been performing regularly with creative Sydney groups including Divergence Jazz Orchestra, Plait Ensemble, Scattered, Rogues. and Sirens Big Band, but more recently has been making noise with his indie-jazz band YUTRIO.

Expect post-bop sensibilities over emo-inspired cadences and juicy open strings.

Yutaro Okuda – Guitar
Finn Ryan – Drums
Dave Quinn – Double Bass
