12 April Thursday – Greening From Ear to Ear
$17.00 – $40.00
Thursday 12 April, 2018, 8.30pm
The one and only James Greening brings his hugely original band, Greening From Ear to Ear, to Foundry616. This is a band worth waiting for. Like the man himself, the music is a rich palette of textures, colours and witty references – the joy is palpable throughout.
This is a fairly new project for James Greening, formed five years ago and his first new band since The World According to James began in the early 1990s. A six piece with a stellar line-up and attractive, yet challenging original compositions, the sextet includes old Greening collaborators (The catholics, Ten Part Invention, Wanderlust) Paul Cutlan, Andrew Robson, outstanding drummer Fabian Hevia alongside outstanding drummer Hamish Stuart and much in-demand accordionist/pianist Gary Daley.
Greening’s music has always been about colour – and Greening From Ear to Ear is an extension of James’ philosophy: that of music as a dialogue. For the band, James composed a new diverse and engaging suite – “Tam O’Shanter Tales”, an encapsulation of his creative life so far, tipping his cap to the great musicians that have shaped his vision.
Come and witness the joyous range of grooves and moods that James and his band of equally visionary musicians create on their journey. Greening Ear to Ear features a menagerie of instruments, including James’s 1926 sousaphone – a sight and sound that needs to be seen and heard to be believed.
James Greening – Trombone, Sousaphone and pocket trumpet
Andrew Robson – Alto and Baritone Saxophone
Paul Cutlan – Tenor Saxophone and Bass Clarinet
Gary Daley – Piano and Accordion
Steve Elphick – Double Bass
Fabian Hevia – Drums
“These compositions, finely arranged by Greening, as with his solos, all encompass strong swinging beats, and the skilful ensemble voicings often sound like a larger band”. (John McBeath 4.5 stars)
“James Greening may be a joyous man but he is no clown – it is one of the noblest human attributes to know life and the world in all its cruelty and compromise and still remain positive and bright; it is a daily battle for anyone who thinks at all”. (John Hardaker)
“Such is the exuberance of this recording that it sounds as if every member of this largish ensemble is having an absolute ball and Greening again proves that he is a composer and trombonist of some considerable stature and this CD cements his position at the top of Australian jazz”. (Michael Prescott, Jazzwise magazine)
