Divergence is Back!
After releasing two albums of original music, the 19-member Divergence Jazz Orchestra have established a unique and inspired artistic voice. Now, after some time away, Divergence returns to Australia’s premier jazz venue, Foundry 616, to deliver their own brand of Australian jazz music with a monthly Monday night residency beginning on 11 March 2019.
Directed by Jenna Cave (composer/conductor) and Paul Weber (trombone), Divergence boast a powerful and beautifully balanced orchestral sound anchored in groove, exhibiting immense sensitivity and subtly and breaking from the big band tradition of old. Divergence have received rave reviews for their two albums, The Opening Statement (2013) and Fake It Until You Make It (2016).
Join Divergence as they perform band leader Jenna Cave’s original compositions, and new works by other leading Australian jazz composers, Bernie McGann, Miroslav Bukovsky, Andrew Murray, Cam McAllister, Andrew Scott and many more.
Each of their tunes featured contain that zest, energy and buzz that are at the core of Divergence Jazz Orchestra’s principles, with an affinity for groove that accentuates the validity and freshness of a jazz orchestra in today’s musical landscape. All of their compositions show originality, and the mix of sound worlds vary from swing to New Orleans to gospel ballads featuring luscious harmonies, exciting writing and all of the features that make for a top-notch jazz group.
“Four stars…Divergence Jazz Orchestra is remarkably strong and consistently pleasing… Cave writes with depth and maturity well beyond her years, a virtue not lost on the DJO, which carries out her wishes to the letter.” – Jack Bowers, ALL ABOUT JAZZ (USA)
