“One of Australia’s finest saxophonists”– Nik Fotakis (Jazz Australia)
“He Flaunts an assertive tone, with an advanced harmonic sensibility and technical fluency that confirm his reverence to Bird and Cannonball Adderley”– Bob Doerschuk (Downbeat Magazine)
Over the years Michael has brought several successful Tributes through the doors of Foundry including, Cannonball/Coltrane with Dale Barlow, Charlie Parker w Strings and most recently Thelonious Monk Octet, which was also performed in Brisbane and Melbourne and record live by Fine Music Radio.
This time Griffin is tackling the music of George Gershwin, joined by Australia’s Got Talent Grand Finalist Liam Burrows. Since then, Liam has enjoyed a meteoric rise to the top of the music scene whilst continuing to develop as an exceptional and unique entertainer, performing all over Australia as well as overseas. He has earned the respect of fellow professionals and stunned the public with a mature vocal style and stage presence that is way beyond his years.
Burrows, like Griffin, was a Semi-Finalist in the Thelonious Monk Institute International Jazz Competition – one for saxophone, the other vocals. Griffin and Burrows first met as youngsters years before this and other accolades on the international stage, as finalists at the 2010 James Morrison Scholarship in Mount Gambier (SA). This performance sees the fruit of their many years of world-wide experience since then.
It’s all about good hard swinging jazz for Michael and with a love for The Great American Songbook, expect to hear covers of some of the finest classic standards from Gershwin at the club tonight, including greats such as ‘I Got Rhythm’, ‘Love is Here to Stay’, ‘Nice Work if You Can Get It’ and ‘Embraceable You’ – with the soaring vocals of the astoundingly talented Liam Burrows.
“Liam is not only a gifted Jazz vocalist, he is also an exceptional young man who is a great ambassador for Jazz. He is completely dedicated to his art and his love for Jazz is evident in all he does. He is passionate about bringing the musical style we both love to the general public.”
– James Morrison (Internationally renowned award-winning jazz musician and composer)
