05 October Thursday – Phillip Johnston & The Coolerators
Thursday 5 October 2017, 8.30pm
“seminal, brilliant post-modern jazz” Downbeat Magazine
Phillip Johnston has led Phillip Johnston & the Coolerators in one form or another since moving to Australia in 2005. After a 2-year lay-off (while focussing on the Greasy Chicken Orchestra, New York’s Microscopic Septet, ‘Page of Madness: Suite from Improvisers’ and touring Wordless!) the band is back with new material and, in preparation for a new recording, is doing just this one single gig, in Sydney at Foundry616, tonight!
The band brings together two of Australia’s most internationally acclaimed touring musicians, Alister Spence (Alister Spence Trio, Clarion Fracture Zone, AAO) and Lloyd Swanton (The Necks, the catholics) with one of Sydney’s most in-demand rhythm section players, Nic Cecire.
The music is an exploration of avant organ jazz: not a historical recreation, but a reinvention. The band will play all of the music to be recorded of the CD, and fill out the two sets by drawing upon the history of Coolerators music, including interpretations of tunes by Steve Lacy, Herbie Nichols and Albert Ayler.
This will be only Johnston’s second release with Australian musicians in 12 years–the last being 2010’s SNAP: ‘Boggy Creek Bop’, with Sandy Evans, Paul Cutlan and Nick Bowd (Rufus). Come hear a combination of brand new material and Coolerators favorites!
Phillip Johnston: soprano/alto saxophone
Alister Spence: organ/piano
