Perth-based saxophonist Gemma Farrell brings her contemporary European jazz trio “MFG” to Sydney’s Foundry616 for the first time.
MFG is the musical collaboration of guitarist Nico Maas, saxophonist Gemma Farrell, and pianist Thomas Goralski. The name MFG acts as an abbreviation for their surnames, as well as the German greeting, Mit freundlichen Grüßen (with friendly greetings).
The three musicians, originally from Germany (Maas and Goralski) and Australia (Farrell), met at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam in 2010 where they studied their Bachelor and Master of Music degrees. Here they collaborated together on many projects, including the Gemma Farrell Group, the Monday Quartet, and Say What?!
In June 2013, they each graduated from CvA and knew this would mean that they would soon part ways. They were however determined that this would not mean the end of their work together and they formed the idea for MFG: a band that would see Maas, Farrell and Goralski as the composers, touring and collaborating with local musicians (on double bass and drums) and recording a new album every two years.
Their debut album Live at the Brisbane Jazz Club was recorded as part of their Australian tour in 2014. Gemma’s composition “Requiem,” featured on this album, was nominated for 2015/2016 WAM Song of the Year in the Jazz Category.
MFG also toured Switzerland and Germany in 2016, recording their second album, People, Places, Lizards. Gemma’s composition “Tony Umbridge,” featured on this album, has recently been nominated for 2017/2018 WAM Song of the Year in the Jazz Category.
In 2018, MFG are undertaking their second tour of Australia and recording their third album this winter. The musical collaboration of Nico Maas on Guitar (Germany), Gemma Farrell and Thomas Goralski on Piano (Germany) sees all three compose for this project and perform their music with special guests on double bass and drums depending on which city they are in.
As well as her own projects, Gemma has played alongside Brandon Allen, the Clayton Brothers Quintet, Justin Dicioccio, Sandy Evans, John Farnham, Mat Jodrell, Branford Marsalis, James Morrison, Will Vinson and many other prestigious artists.
Please join MFG for their first Sydney performance as a part of their 2018 Australian tour, which will take place shortly before recording their third album. For this tour and album, and all future collaborations, the band have decided to focus on funk jazz.
MFG will be joined by Kane Shaw on Bass and Ryan Daunt on Drums.
