We were so taken with the performance of the Matt McMahon Quartet in September that we asked him back earlier than planned when a slot came up in early November. This one is for true fans, those not going to Wangaratta.
This time round the Matt McMahon Quartet features the addition rising star trumpeter Tom Avegenicos who was placed third at last year’s Wangaratta Jazz Festival National Jazz Awards. He’s a prodigious talent, undoubtedly the finest young trumpet player to hit to the scene since Ken Allars. His subtle, imaginative soling belies his years. It will be interesting to experience the way he will interact with the wonderful Matt McMahon, who the critic John Clare, listening to him playing with the great US alto saxophonist Greg Osby, called “Mr Taste”.
Expect to hear McMahon originals and some choice standards as these musicians draw on their many influences from the jazz world and beyond. Jono Brown (bass) and Tim Firth (drums).
“McMahon’s playing is ravishing …the music is as good as any current piano-trio jazz”
