Mike Nock – The Nocktet

Mike Nock – The Nocktet

Last year Mike Nock suffered a serious pedestrian accident in what could well have been a career ending injury. After a long recuperation and the support of the Australian jazz community, the fantastic news is that Mike has made a remarkable recovery and is back gigging – business as usual!

To mark the occasion his ground breaking NOCTET will be making a much anticipated return to FOUNDRY 616, on Friday Jan 4th. This is Mike Nock’s first gig since his accident six months ago and will be a special night for many reasons. Mike’s large ensembles have always generated a palpable sense of excitement and this night will be no exception. With guitarist Hilary Geddes, saxophonist Sam Gill and trombonist Alex Silver, three emerging talents making their debut alongside the outstanding Tom Avgenicos on trumpet, Karl Laskowski tenor sax, bassist Brett Hirst, drummer Pug Waples and composer/pianist Mike Nock, this will be an exceptional night of modern Australian jazz at its best.

Mike Nock’s life in music spans some 60 years from his early years in New Zealand to playing jazz on the world stage. As a pianist, composer, educator and band leader, Mike has made a huge impact on the Australian jazz scene over the past three decades, an outstanding contribution acknowledged by his receipt of the prestigious Don Banks Award.

His imposing international experience includes some 25 years working in the USA alongside many of the world’s top jazz musicians such as: Coleman Hawkins, Yusef Lateef, John Schofield, John Abercrombie and Michael Brecker. Mike Nock also led the 1960’s seminal jazz-rock fusion group “The Fourth Way” which performed on the same bills as rock bands like the Grateful Dead and Cream. He was one of the first jazz musicians to use the new electric keyboard, the Fender Rhodes, which had a huge impact on the way jazz evolved at that time.

Noctet features both established artists and recognisable exceptional younger players – keeping, as John Shand (Sydney Morning Herald) puts it, “an eye to the future as well as the rear-view mirror”.
