Virtuoso bassist, prolific composer, and bandleader Steve Hunter has been leading bands since forming his first in 1978 at just 18 years old. With ten albums of original music, he has also contributed compositions and performances to countless other artists’ works.
Steve has played alongside Billy Cobham, Chick Corea, Mark Isham, Bobby Previte, and Australian greats like Mark Simmond’s Freeboppers, Dale Barlow, Joseph Tawadros Trio, James Muller, Bandaluzia, Tree, and The Translators.
His current trio—featuring Matt McMahon (piano/keyboards) and Gordon Rytmeister (drums)—has been performing together for seven years, showcasing Hunter’s original compositions alongside select works by Chick Corea and Miles Davis. While rooted in jazz, his music weaves in influences from Spain, Africa, Latin America, and Funk, creating a dynamic and expressive sound.
“Hunter has always been one of our most single-minded and disciplined players, one whose prolific output has been of one consistently high standard – the standard he applies, bushido-like, to himself and expects (and gets) from his sidemen/collaborators.” – dynamic and expressive sound
“The Steve Hunter group is one of several bands to offer this world-class level of creativity. Its music reflects the sum of the parts that is Hunter – virtuoso bassist, imaginative composer, astute band-leader.” – Sydney Morning Herald
