Major Zulu is a singer-songwriter based in Sydney, whose journey has taken her from the heart of Zambia to the UK and the vibrant streets of Paris.
Her musical journey began in the UK, where she gained recognition as a powerful vocalist. But it was her move to Paris that truly ignited her creativity, spending eight years absorbing the city’s rich musical culture. This diverse experience has shaped her music into an expressive mix that resonates with listeners everywhere.
Major’s earthy vocal tones, timeless songs, and artful storytelling make every performance an emotional journey. Whether you’re looking to laugh, cry, or simply get lost in a moment, her music offers a profound sense of connection and reflection. One moment, you’re immersed in the vibrant jazz scene of Paris’ “Aux Trois Mailletz,” and the next, you’re transported to the heart of Zambia’s history, feeling the echoes of her father’s childhood under colonial rule and his activism for democracy. This seamless blending of personal narratives and historical events creates a truly immersive and thought-provoking listening experience.
Major has wowed audiences at sold-out shows like the Sydney International Jazz Festival, Jazz in the Vineyards, and the Art Gallery of NSW. She has performed alongside artists like Norah Jones, Amy Winehouse, James Morrison, Paolo Nutini, and Earth, Wind & Fire.
Her critically acclaimed EP, The DIY Project Called Life, recorded in Sydney, was released in 2021. Major is now putting the finishing touches on her new self-titled EP, I am Major Zulu. Proudly sponsored by Create NSW, Major is excited to debut these fresh tracks at Foundry 616 Jazz Club on November 23rd and December 21st, 2024.
