9:30 PM: EPHEMERA TRIO
“Ephemera is always outward-reaching conceptually…The quartet can achieve a surprisingly orchestral sweep…music of peculiar depth and mystery that somehow evades the laws of gravity.” – SYDNEY MORNING HERALD
“Terrific, rich, pulsating and reverberant… sophisticated and compelling….vivid and colourful.” – LIMELIGHT MAGAZINE
Ephemera is a musical exploration of celestial landscapes such as pulsars, craters, planetary atmospheres, stars, sun, and void. Merging the sound worlds of jazz and contemporary classical, and set to real space sounds and projections, it is a unique sonic experience. The ensemble is led by Keyna Wilkins (piano/flute/compositions) with Elsen Price (double bass/loop pedal) and Will Gilbert (trumpet).
The performance includes freely improvised pieces, with NASA recordings of electromagnetic waves from planets and stars compiled by astronomer Professor Paul Francis often with projections of space probe footage. Each member brings their own unique voice to the ensemble, drawing from a multitude of musical backgrounds to create a distinctive sound world that organically reacts to stellar concepts.
