Hatch is the new project from bassist Hannah James. A forum to develop new ideas and collaborations the band sound moves freely between ambient ECM textures, hard hitting modern jazz and soaring lyricism. With their first album due out later in the year the project features some of Sydney’s finest improvising musicians: Paul Cutlan – Tenor/Soprano Sax + Bass Clarinet, Harry Sutherland – piano, Carl Morgan – Guitar, Hannah James – bass and Jamie Cameron – drums.
Recipient of the 2011 Jann Rutherford Memorial Award, Hannah is bassist, composer and improviser based in Sydney, Australia.
Hannah released her first album in 2011 with the Hannah James Quintet and in 2013 Trilophony a live trio recording featuring Casey Golden and Ed Rodrigues.
She has performed across Australia including the Wangaratta Jazz Festival, Sydney International Womens Festival, Brisbane Powerhouse and many more as well as on national TV and radio and international including tours to the UK and Indonesia. She has performed and/or recorded with a diverse range of artists including Ingrid and Christine Jensen, Katie Noonan, Alister Spence, Sandy Evans, Matt Keegan, Don Burrows, Angie Hart (Frente) and Dean Manning (Leonardo’s Bride).
Paul’s uniquely expressive voice as a multi-instrumentalist and composer is informed by many styles, including contemporary classical music, world music and jazz. Amongst his many credits as a long standing creative musician Paul has worked with the Sydney Symphony, Ten Part Invention, Clarion Fracture Zone, The Australian Art Orchestra and ARIA award winning band MARA! As well as an impressive discography and international touring record, Paul is a highly respected composer and it is a great honour to have him as part of this project.
Jamie has played all over the place, with a huge variety of artists including songwriters, jazz groups, rock bands and percussion ensembles, both live and in the studio. He is currently performing with Luke Escombe & The Corporation, 20th Century Dog, the Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra, Facemeat, Joe Kelly, Cumbiamuffin and Song Fwaa.
Carl Morgan is a Jazz Guitarist and Composer based in Sydney, Australia. He studied at the ANU where he received a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance and in 2014, won 1st place in the National Jazz Awards held at the Wangaratta Festival of Jazz.
He has performed regularly in Sydney and around Australia with many local and international artists including Chris Potter (USA), Jim Mcneely (USA), Bob Mintzer (USA), Virgil Donati, Charlie Watts, The Jazzgroove Mothership Orchestra, Scoredatura and the Kristin Berardi Band. In 2012 Carl released his debut album Stone featuring Mike Rivett, Steve Barry, Alex Boneham and Ben Vanderwal
Harry Sutherland is one of Australia’s most promising young jazz pianists. He has won the James Morrison Scholarship at the Generations in Jazz festival in Mount Gambier, recorded for ABC Jazz digital radio and Jazztrack. Harry has studied with a number of great pianists in both Australia and abroad including Kevin Hunt, John Harkins, Matt McMahon and John Taylor. He has played with
some of the most well-respected figures in Australian jazz including Geoff Bull, Paul Furniss, Dale Barlow, James Greening, Steve Elphick, Warwick Alder, Ben Hauptmann and Elana Stone.
