24 November Friday – FinnLand
Friday 24 November 2017, 8.30pm
Come and enjoy a great new project from pianist and bandleader Gerard Masters: FinnLand explores fresh sonic territory through some music that will be familiar to all: the Finn brothers and their timeless music that spans Split Enz, Crowded House and beyond – a universally appealing repertoire that is exquisitely reimagined.
Finnland brings together leading Australian jazz artists to reinterpret these popular classics. Featuring the vocals of Masters and Emma Pask, 0ne of the most respected vocal artists working in Australian jazz today. Described by James Morrison as “the greatest gift to Australian Jazz Vocals in the last decade”, Emma Pask pays tribute to iconic Finn compositions alongside the warm and powerful tones of a band that has a distinctive rapport.
New Zealand-born Gerard Masters has always been at ease playing across a spectrum of styles. The pianist is much in demand, playing for pop and country music stars including Missy Higgins, Pete Murray, the Potbelleez and the McClymonts, but opportunities to play jazz are less frequent. He is renowned for his natural ability to stretch the possibilities of music.
“To my ears, good jazz music has always been about drawing an audience in, making them feel great about life, and then taking them places that they may not have ventured before.
I feel that FinnLand is a group that does just that, drawing on the huge chapter of the great Australasian songbook penned by Neil and Tim Finn, and using these timeless songs as launch pads for musical journeys.
My FinnLand cohorts have all grown up with Finn music as part of their childhood soundtracks, and use their extensive experience to get right inside the songs, and build fresh interpretations. Paying tribute to the composers , whilst putting their own brush strokes to the sonic canvas”. Gerard Masters
With some of Australia’s most innovative and experienced jazz voices in the line-up, FinnLand is much more than a tribute and is sure to be a memorable evening that resonates with the Foundry616 audience.
