Product Description

“Different sound-worlds kept opening up like fresh vistas on a maritime journey…it is the collective imaginative responses to its influences that makes Mara! such a bright jewel in Australia’s world-music crown”.  John Shand, SMH (review of Foundry616 Sept 2016 performance)

Foundry616 welcomes back the unique and exotic Mara! in their first Sydney concert for 2017!

After a fabulous performance at Foundry 616 in September 2016, Mara! return to give their first Sydney concert for the year. Renowned for being Australia’s original “urban/cross-cultural/world/jazz/fusion” ensemble, they weave an exotic musical nocturne made up of traditional melodies from the Balkans and beyond mixed with original compositions and jazz laced improvisations.

Mara! is one of the country’s best loved, most impressive and longest performing world music ensembles for a very good reason. This ARIA-award-winning quintet tours the globe with a unique fusion of world music and jazz. This international experience, combined with lead singer Mara Kiek’s extraordinary voice, makes Mara! a riveting multicultural experience, mixing traditional vocal and instrumental repertoire from a wide variety of cultures and jazz.

With virtuosic performances from Australian jazz legends Sandy Evans, Paul Cutlan on woodwinds and Lloyd Swanton on double bass, along with world music icons Mara & Llew Kiek, the band has eight successful albums to their credit, including two ARIA winners and two final nominees.

International reviews:

“…‘Neo Acoustic Music’… amazing and thrilling, containing a power beyond rock music… aggressive but human”. Marquee Magazine (Japan)

“All elements faultlessly fall into their place…coupled with the virtuoso musical spectacle that they offer, their fusion is a wonderful experience.” De Standaard (Belgium)

“…there is a brilliant simplicity that reminds us at times (if one needed to make comparisons with the area of pop music) of the communicative urgency of Violent Femmes or certain strongly lyrical pages of the Cocteau Twins…” Tim Tam (Italy)
