20 January Friday – Miriam Waks & Alberto Pibiri
Friday 20 January 2017, 8.30pm
Miriam Waks & Alberto Pibiri
Several years have passed since vocalist Miriam Waks and pianist Alberto Pibiri left their respective countries of Australia and Italy in order to further enrich their artistic pursuits. Each made their way to New York City: Alberto drawn by the jazz-drenched history of a musical culture still in full-swing, and Miriam by the sense of possibility, freedom and diversity of artistic expression.
In 2016 they met by chance encounter and have since embarked on a musical collaboration to present a range of their varied passions including for jazz, classical, world, and original music. This special Foundry performance marks the exciting debut of their soon-to-be-released first album together of piano and voice. Join them for this special night of intimate musical portraits.
New York-based Alberto Pibiri was born in Sardinia, Italy. As a child he developed a love of jazz music especially inspired by the great Oscar Peterson. While a teenager he studied classical music in the Conservatory of Pierluigi da Palestrina, and after graduating moved to Paris where he lived for 8 years, teaching and performing as sideman and bandleader. During this time he became acquainted with jazz vocal legend Sheila Jordan who became a mentor, friend, and collaborator. Since moving to New York Alberto has had the opportunity to work and perform with many great musicians of the New York jazz scene including Sheila Jordan, Jay Clayton, Dave Stryker, Adrian Cunningham. He has performed at iconic venues such as Carnegie Hall, Blue Note, Smalls, and Trumpets, as well as jazz festivals across the US and Europe.
Now based in New York City, Miriam Waks made her performing debut at the tender age of 10 singing solo at the Sydney Opera House. A diverse and vibrant performer who sings in 17 languages, Miriam traverses musical genres from jazz to world to singer/songwriter to electronic music. Her international performances have included France, Cuba, Brussels, Edinburgh, London, India, Macau, Hong Kong, Australia & America. Her first album of original compositions was recorded in Nashville last month and is slated for a mid-year release.
