11 May Thursday – Elysian Fields
Thursday 11 May 2017, 8.30pm
Elysian Fields – “Autumn @Foundry 616”
Australia’s only electric viola da gamba band
Australia’s only electric viola da gamba band continue their vision of creating a new musical genre and great Australian music when they return to Foundry616 for an Autumn gig.
Consisting of some of Sydney’s finest established jazz musicians in Matt McMahon and Matt Keegan – and three future musical leaders, Susie Bishop (voice and violin), Siebe Pogson (bass) and Finn Ryan (drums) – the band work in stunning partnership to electric viola da gambist, Jenny Eriksson. Eriksson is widely recognised as one of Australia’s best known exponents of her rare, but beautiful instrument and one of the world’s handful of electric gambists. (The acoustic viola da gamba is a 7-string instrument with frets held between the knees like a cello.)
Leading the set list for the evening will be the world premiere of a new song cycle by Matt McMahon. Commissioned by Jenny Eriksson, the songs draw on one of McMahon’s favourite poets, Thomas Wyatt. Eriksson herself is contributing a new chart inspired by one of the greatest composer/performers of the viola da gamba, Marin Marais.
Alongside their extensive original material the band’s repertoire ranges from “A remark you made” by Joe Zawinul, to charts and folk songs reflecting Eriksson’s Scandinavian heritage from the likes of jazz/fusion guitarist, Mats Norrefalk, e.s.t. and Norwegian pianist/composer, Jan Gunnar Hoff.
Able to shift in the moment from blues to complex, original material, from cool Scandinavian jazz to haunting ballads, Elysian Fields is hard to categorise and not to be missed!
