02 August Wednesday – Tim Stevens (Melb) Solo Albums launch
Wednesday 2 August 2017, 8.30pm
Join us for an intimate debut and special treat for fans of solo piano tonight.
Tim Stevens is a Melbourne-based piano player and composer whose recorded work over the last twenty years has been of predominantly original music. A free improviser as well as a performer of composed material, his eight albums since the turn of the century (four solo and four trio) have been met with a consistent level of popular and critical acclaim.
For tonight’s performance Tim is taking the opportunity to ‘launch’ his two most recent solo recordings, neither of which has been presented in Sydney before.
I’ll tell you later (2015) is a program of improvised pieces that deal with and lead towards compositions that he met as a child in the context of the Anglican church. It is an auto-ethnographic archaeology of musical language and an exploration of influence and confluence. Dealing with hymns, motets, and canticles, it is an engagement across at least forty years – and there’s a big Bach fugue to wind it all up.
Media vita (2017) is a different thing entirely: a selection of twelve pieces composed in 2016, when Tim took it upon himself to write a tune every day of the leap year. It is in fact the first time he has done a solo album entirely of tunes.
With a broad emotional range and a varied pianistic palette it is a distinctive and original recording with enormous accessibility and he is looking forward to sharing it outside his home town.
