01 November Wednesday – Joe Farnsworth Prime Time Quartet (New York/Sydney)
Wednesday 1 November 2017, 8.30pm
Joe Farnsworth Prime Time Quartet
“Near to being absolutely perfect.” – Benny Golson
New York jazz musician Joe Farnsworth returns to Foundry616 for the first time since his performance in May 2016, which was recorded live. This time, he has again assembled the cream of Australian jazz for his east coast tour with iconic tenor saxophonist and Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers alumni Dale Barlow and Chicago born and Sydney’s most swingin’ pianist John Harkins, now joined by fellow New Yorker, bassist Brandi Disterheft.
Joe Farnsworth is regarded as one of the leading jazz drummers in the world today, dedicated to the great tradition of jazz drumming conceived by artists like Max Roach, Roy Haynes, Elvin Jones, Billy Higgins and Arthur Taylor. Frequently called upon to “light a fire” under their bands, Joe has appeared on more than 70 albums and shared the stage with such jazz luminaries as Wynton Marsalis, Cedar Walton, Pharoah Sanders, Kurt Elling and Diana Krall.
Jazz bassist Brandi Disterheft has performed and recorded with Joe Farnsworth as a bandleader herself. Winning a JUNO (Canadian Grammy) for her “Debut” album, Brandi also had the honour to be the bassist for the legendary Hank Jones on the album “Pleased to Meet You”. Having undertaken her apprenticeship under Miles Davis’ bassist Ron Carter, her innovative live shows showcase her uptempo, swinging originals and ambient voice. The musician, known for her fiery bass playing, has captivated international audiences at jazz festivals in Japan, Haiti, Canada, Europe, USA and at prestigious venues including Carnegie Hall and the Vienna Opera House. Recordings and performances include collaborations with top drawer musicians such as Anita O’day, Benny Green, Cyrus Chestnut, Vincent Herring and Renee Rosnes to name a few.
